Following are our reviews after testing the ENVY 5055 All-in-One Inkjet Printer.

Dimensions

The HP ENVY 5055 is a compact printer that is perfect for small spaces in your home or office.

  • Height: 4.9″ (12.4 cm)
  • Width: 17.5″ (44.5 cm)
  • Depth: 14.4″ (36.5 cm)
  • Weight: 12.1 lbs (5.5 kg)

Build & Design Quality

The HP ENVY 5055 has a sub-par design. It only has one input tray with a capacity of 100 sheets which is quite small and cannot be removed, so those of you who have large hands might have difficulty when loading paper.

The main input tray is also a photo paper tray, which means you cannot load both types of paper at the same time. Additionally, the printer must be turned on when replacing ink cartridges.

The printer feels quite sturdy except for the rather thin output tray, and the power cable can be removed, making it easier to replace. Paper jams are easy to solve because you only need to access the panel by lifting the scanner base.

Display Screen

The printer has a good display screen. It’s on the small side and it’s monochrome, but good visibility whether you stand or sit. The menu is quite intuitive and there are touch-sensitive buttons around the screen, this is to help you navigate. There is an instructional video on how to load paper and replace ink cartridges, which you can see directly on a 2.2″ (5.7 cm) screen.

Cartridge

This HP ENVY 5055 has a bad cartridge system. They only have one color cartridge, and both the black and color cartridges run out quickly, so you have to replace them often. Fortunately, there are high-yield cartridges available if you want to print a lot, and they qualify for the HP Instant Ink subscription service.

If you want a printer that can print more color and black documents, see PIXMA iX6820 products from Canon.

The printer can accept third-party cartridges, but using them can void the warranty.

Scanner

ENVY 5055 has mediocre scanning features. They only have a flatbed, so you won’t find an automatic document supplier, and as a result, there is no duplex scanning. Additionally, the lid cannot be extended to accommodate thicker documents.

Printing Speed

Speaking of speed, ENVY 5055 has a mediocre printing speed. They are very slow at printing black and color documents. As for photos, although it may look like it takes time, it’s quite good compared to other printers.

Photo Printing Quality

ENVY 5055 has excellent photo printing quality. There are a number of subtle details and colors that look bright. Color temperature rests on the warm side, giving the overall reddish color to the image. Also, there are a few binders on the grayscale.

Color Accuracy

ENVY 5055 has excellent color accuracy; However, most colors are still somewhat inaccurate when compared to the original source. That said, it will be fine if you just want to add a splash of color in the document.

Printing Size

The HP 5055 only has one input tray for plain paper and photo paper formats. It supports the most common paper sizes up to standard legal sizes, as well as the most photo paper sizes, except 2″ x 3″.

Cost Per Print

This printer has a bad printing cost. Although cartridges are relatively inexpensive, they need to be replaced frequently, which increases quickly over time if you print a lot. Also, because you have a tri-color cartridge, you need to replace the entire cartridge if one color runs out.

Remember that even if you only print in black, most inkjet printers continue to use color cartridges for service tasks, so you might still need to replace them eventually.

Connectivity

The printer has decent connectivity options. You can connect it via a wired USB connection or wirelessly via Wi-Fi, but unfortunately, ENVY 5055 does not have an ethernet port and cannot print from an external storage device. And even though they are advertised as having Bluetooth support, they can only be used to do the initial setup, not for printing jobs.

Mobile Print App

This 5055 printer is compatible with the HP Smart App which is available for Android and iOS devices. This allows you to print, scan, and copy. You can also perform maintenance tasks, as well as buy or manage your HP ink subscriptions.
