Here is a review of our test results on the Canon PIXMA TR8520 product.

The Canon PIXMA TR8520 is a compact printer. Although they are slightly heavier than the Canon PIXMA TS6320, their size still makes them suitable for office desks or dormitories with limited space.

  • Height: 7.4″ (18.9 cm)
  • Width: 17.3″ (43.9 cm)
  • Depth: 13.8″ (35.1 cm)
  • Weight: 17.3 lbs (7.9 kg)

Build & Design Quality

The PIXMA TR8520 is a well-built printer. The printer has a sturdy plastic shape, although some parts such as the input and output trays are thin.

The scanner lid can be raised slightly to accommodate the book, you can even easily reach the ink cartridges by lifting the scanner cover.

Paper jams are also very easy to reach as you can get them by opening the scanner or back cover. However, if you need to print anything, the operation panel must be lifted first, which may not be intuitive for everyone.

Display Screen

The Canon TR8520 has a good display and its LCD touch screen is easy to see from almost any angle. However, the screen can become unresponsive to your touch and prone to double-clicking. Still, the navigation menu is comfortable and straightforward to use.

The printer has several different viewing videos available in case you need to troubleshoot without manuals including clearing paper jams, loading paper, and rear access.

The printer has a good inkjet cartridge system. The color cartridge is very easy to change only the color that has run out, which is practical. While the TR8520 doesn’t produce a lot of black pages, its color cartridge performs much better.

If you like printing images for scrapbooks, then you should be able to get plenty of print before you run out of ink. However, if black page results are important to you, consider the Epson WorkForce WF-2860.

This TR8520 printer will accept third party cartridges, but this may invalidate the warranty, and special attention must be paid to it as it uses a combination of dye and pigment-based inks.

The printer has great scanning features. There are two ways you can scan files, depending on your needs. Flat mats are great for larger or more fragile objects like books, and sheetfed’s, which are useful for scanning multiple papers automatically.

Unlike the PIXMA TS9120, it also has fax integrated into its design, making it easy to scan documents and send them to other people.

You can perform advanced scans with Canon My Image Garden software at a higher resolution. If you are using the Canon IJ Scan Utility application, these settings can be found under the “scan gear” tab. Please note that if the document you are scanning exceeds 100 MB then you will need to deactivate “thumbnail preview mode” (located in the upper left corner of the “advanced scan” settings page) to reach 1200 DPI.

Cost Per Print

The Canon PIXMA TR8520 has an excellent cost per print. It is very affordable to print in black or color. It’s also very affordable to print photos with this printer, especially compared to the cost of the ink and the printer itself.

While you can buy each ink cartridge separately, Canon also offers bundled packages that can save you a lot more in the long run.

If cost-per-print is the only feature you’re looking for, check out the Canon PIXMA iX6820 INKvestment Tank or the Brother MFC-J805DW. If you want a printer that works pretty much the same but has a cheaper color cartridge, consider the Canon PIXMA TR8620 model.

Printing Speed

TR8520 has an average print speed. They take a long time to print black text documents. Even for color documents, it is much slower. It takes almost a minute to produce a single 4″ x 6″ photo. If you want to print color photos faster, consider the Canon PIXMA TS9520.

Photo Printing Quality

The TR8520 has a fairly good photo printing quality. The color looks bright, albeit a little saturated. The details are self-explanatory and there is no banding in the grayscale palette.

Color Accuracy

This printer has decent color accuracy. This may not be a big deal for those who only need a few color documents, if you want more precise color accuracy you might be disappointed, especially when the results are compared to the original file or document.

If you want a similar printer with slightly better color accuracy, the PIXMA TR4520 is a good alternative.

Printing Size

This Canon TR8520 has two adjustable paper trays. One in front and one behind. It can also be expanded to support the most popular paper formats and types.

TR8520 has excellent connectivity. For wireless, there are several connection options available including a Wi-Fi connection through your router. Although you won’t be able to use Wi-Fi Direct, you can still connect via Bluetooth.

If you’re printing from your phone, you can also use Apple AirPrint or Mopria for Android devices. However, if you prefer a more wired setup, you can either physically connect it to the router using an ethernet cable, or you can use a USB plug to plug it directly into your computer. There is also an SD card slot on the front of the printer.

Mobile App Print

Canon PIXMA TR8520 is compatible with Canon PRINT Inkjet / SELPHY. Available on Android and iOS, it allows you to print, scan, and copy directly from the app.

PDFs, images, and HTML web pages can also be printed from this app and you can use the scan feature to view scanned images right on your device.
