Canon PIXMA G7020 Wireless MegaTank All-In-One Printer
PIXMA G7020 is an effective MegaTank All-in-One Inkjet Printer that eliminates the need for ink cartridges. This product from Canon uses an integrated ink tank system which makes refilling much simpler and provides an astounding 6000 black or 7700 color print on only one set of fresh ink bottles.
In addition, the G7020 also comes with a complete ink set and a pair of extra black ink bottles to get 12,000 more black prints. The ink reservoirs are also easy to see, they are placed at the front of the G7020 so you can make sure you never run out of power.
During the printing process, the G7020 uses a reliable inkjet system with a resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi which will produce sharp text and vivid images. This system can also work quickly with an identification speed of 13 black and 6.8 colored ipm.
The printer has 250 sheet input trays and 100 sheet back paper trays, the printer is ready to do large print jobs. Users can also easily create borderless photos and work with a variety of standard media sizes ranging from 3.5 x 3.5″ to 8.5 x 14″.
Scanning and copying are also possible by flatbed unit scanners that display optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi for images that look sharp and detailed. While the default Wi-Fi connectivity in addition to USB 2.0 adds to the potential of the printer by supporting various cellular printing protocols, including Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Mopria, and the Canon PRINT App itself.
The following is a detailed review of the results of the tests we conducted on the MegaTank PIXMA G7020 Wireless product.
Dimensions
PIXMA G7020 is a MegaTank Wireless printer that is rather compact. They are slightly heavier than the Canon PIXMA TR8520 and a little taller, but this should not be a problem for most of the space.
- Height: 9.1″ (23.1 cm)
- Width: 15.9″ (40.4 cm)
- Depth: 14.5″ (36.9 cm)
- Weight: 21.0 lbs (9.5 kg)
Build & Design Quality
The G7020 is built with sturdy plastic. There is good access to the ink cartridges because they are under the scanner, and when you refill ink or deal with a paper jam, the scanner lid does not fall. You can easily access a paper jam from the back of the printer or by lifting the entire scanner. The front and back paper trays both have sliders to adjust different page sizes. However, the rear input tray may jam when removing it from the printer or when replacing it.
Display Screen
PIXMA G7020 has a bad screen display. This is a Monochrome 2 Line Full-Dot Matrix display that gives a vintage feel, like a calculator. However, some people might find it limited because it can only display a limited amount of text at a time. There are also physical buttons that surround the screen and while you can tilt the screen cover, the display screen has a poor viewing angle.
Scanner
This product from Canon has great scanning features. It has a flatbed to scan thicker documents or more fragile items such as old family photos. You can also easily scan several documents at once using a sheetfed scanner; however, two-sided documents need to be scanned manually on each side because this printer does not have a duplex scanning feature.
The G7020 has an integrated fax, so you can easily scan documents and send them to others. Although the DPI limit seems to be 600 at first glance, if you look under the “driver” tab, you can do further scanning with Canon’s My Image Garden software at Canon at a higher resolution. If you use the Canon IJ Scan Utility application, these settings can be found under the “scangear” tab.
Note:
If the document you are scanning exceeds 100MB then you must turn off the “thumbnail preview mode” (located in the upper left corner of the “advanced scan” settings page) to reach 1,200 DPI.
Cartridge
The PIXMA G7020 has an outstanding inkjet cartridge system. This is capable of producing a large number of black and color pages so you can print a stack of documents before your cartridge needs to be refilled. The printer also accepts third-party cartridges, but this can invalidate your warranty.
Printing Speed
Speaking of speed, the Canon G7020 has a disappointing printing speed. For the first page, a black text document takes time. The next page also looks very slow and color documents can take longer, this can be stressful when you are in a hurry.
It takes them less than a minute to print one 4″ x 6″ photo. If printing speed is important to you, see OfficeJet Pro 9015 from HP.
Photo Printing Quality
PIXMA G7020 has good photo print quality. But there are still a few lines across the darker photo area and a little saturation, but this printer is still classified as producing good detail.
Color Accuracy
The G7020 has mediocre color accuracy. While it has to do the job of adding color splashes to the office or school work reports, if you are looking for accurate colors you might find the color reproduction disappointing, especially compared to the original source file.
Printing Size
The printer has two paper trays that can be adjusted with sliders to fit different paper dimensions. The rear paper tray can still be extended to support longer sizes such as legal paper.
Cost Per Print
This G7020 printer has an outstanding print cost ratio. They are very affordable for printing in black, color, or photos, especially when compared to the cost of the cartridge because each cartridge can produce many pages before they need to be replaced. Although you can buy each cartridge yourself, Canon also sells bundle packages that can save you more money.
Remember that even if you only print in black, most inkjet printers will continue to use color cartridges for service tasks, so you might still need to replace them eventually.
Connectivity
The PIXMA G7020 has great connectivity options. You can easily connect wirelessly to this printer using Wi-Fi through your router or with Wi-Fi Direct. You can also print directly from your mobile device using Apple AirPrint if you use an iOS device, or Mopria Print Service if you install it on an Android device.
For cable connections, you can use an ethernet cable or directly connect it to your computer via USB input. This is different from the Canon PIXMA TS9120, they have no Bluetooth support and there is no place to connect external storage too.
Mobile Print App
As with other Canon wireless printers, the PIXMA G7020 supports Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY which is available on Android and iOS. This application allows you to print, scan, and copy directly from a mobile device. You can also order new ink, see what you are scanning, and print pages directly from the internet.
