Canon PIXMA G1220 MegaTank Inkjet Printer
Canon PIXMA G1220 is an inkjet printer featuring a large integrated ink tank that produces approximately 7700 color pages or 6000 black and white pages. This printer is designed for people who need to print both text documents and photos quickly.
The printer is capable of producing sharp images at high resolutions of up to 4800 x 1200 dpi, and pigment-based black ink can help keep small font text sharp and easy to read. The PIXMA G1220 offers a black print speed of 9.1 ppm and 5 ppm for color.
This Canon product supports several paper sizes from 4 x 6″ to 8.5 x 14″, and the long document print feature also allows you to print documents and banners up to 8.5 x 47.2″ in size. Borderless printing is available. Measuring up to 8.5 x 11″ and dye-based colors offer rich, vibrant hues with crisp detail.
For media handling, the G1220 printer is also equipped with a rear input tray that holds up to 100 sheets of plain paper, as well as an output tray that retracts on the front.
The following is a review of our test results on the Canon PIXMA G1220 MegaTank Inkjet Printer.
Dimensions
The Canon PIXMA G1220 is a compact printer and won’t take up much space on your desk.
- Height: 5.3 “(13.5 cm)
- Width: 17.3 “(44.0 cm)
- Depth: 12.8 “(32.5 cm)
- Weight: 10.6 lbs (4.8 kg)
Build & Design Quality
This PIXMA G1220 has a good build quality. The body is plastic and the output tray feels quite sturdy, and it has a detachable power cord for easy replacement if damaged.
This printer provides easy access to paper jams and ink tanks by lifting the top cover. The lid can also stay open on its own, but it doesn’t have a damper, so it will close itself if you don’t point it slowly. But sadly, the individual ink covers feel really thin. In addition, the body will lift if too much pressure is applied.
This inkjet printer only has a USB Type-B port, and cannot be plugged into your router with an Ethernet cable or used wirelessly. And strangely, they don’t have a USB cable.
Display Screen
The Canon PIXMA G1220 only has four physical buttons: Power, Cancel/Resume, Ok/Align Page, and Change Paper Format. They don’t have a display screen.
Cartridge
The printer has an amazing supertank system. It uses four large capacity tanks that you can refill yourself with ink bottles. This can yield an incredible number of pages, so you don’t have to fill the tank often.
This printer does not allow you to continue printing in color if the black ink tank is empty. Just like the Canon PIXMA G7020 and Canon PIXMA G6020, it comes with three large black ink bottles, which will last quite a while.
While you can fill supertank with third-party ink, we didn’t try it and don’t recommend you to do it. Keep in mind, low-quality ink can damage your printhead, and, unlike most inkjets, ink cannot be wiped off if something goes wrong. Using third party supplies may also void your warranty.
Scanner
Canon G1220 is a printer with a single function so it does not have a scanner. If you prefer a printer that has a scanner, check out the Canon PIXMA G3260 and Canon PIXMA G2260.
Printing Speed
The G1220 printer is slow to print. On the first page of a black text document, the printer takes a moment to exit, and the next page can hardly be faster.
Printing color documents is also very slow, but photos are printed very quickly. The printer cannot print on both sides automatically, so you will need to manually flip the pages.
Cost-Per-Print
As a MegaTank printer, the PIXMA G1220 has a very low cost per print. It generates a lot of pages, so you don’t have to refill the tank too often, and much less buy a new ink bottle.
You can subscribe to Canon Auto Fill Service, it automatically orders and sends you ink when they run low.
Photo Printing Quality
The G1220 has good photo print quality, but there is still a lot of grain on the face and some banding when you print some colors.
Color Accuracy
PIXMA G1220 produces colors that look quite accurate. While this is not recommended for tasks that require precise color reproduction, it should be fine if you are just adding color to your report or printing casual photos.
Connectivity
This type of Canon product has poor connectivity options. You can print only by connecting it to your computer via the USB-A to USB-B cable only. But strangely, this cable is also not included with the printer. So if you want to print wirelessly, check out the Canon PIXMA G3260.
Mobile Print App
As we said above, this Canon PIXMA G1220 is not compatible with any mobile applications.
Software & Compatible
Canon PIXMA G1220 is compatible with Windows10, Windows 8.1, Windows: 7, Windows 7 SP1, and macOS Big Sur 11.0, macOS Catalina 10.15, macOS Mojave 10.14, macOS High Sierra 10.13, macOS Sierra v10.12.6.
